We seek one Postdoctoral Researcher who will
explore the design of
large-scale hierarchical and distributed data learning schemes for
high-level big data analytics, including the challenging tasks of
source extraction and transient identification,
in conjunction with data classification and vetting. The effort will
focus on implementing
an innovative approach by developing services built on top of
unified analytics engines
(e.g. Apache Spark with Akka and Scala), in order to achieve
large-scale distributed storage and distributed processing.
The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with
ARGOS-CDS’s lead system engineer to support the
implementation of the relevant algorithms/software running on DSP or
FPGA accelerators, as well as to verifying
the robustness of the archiving and alerting subsystem, with respect
to latency requirements and
accurate detection of astronomical phenomena against false alarms.
The possition will be available for two years with a
possibility for extention.
The successful candidate will be working in the international and
multidisciplinary environment of FORTH,
in Heraklion, Crete, Greece. The post-doctoral researcher will
closely collaborate with members of
the Signal Processing Lab at the Institute of Computer Science
(ICS-FORTH), for topics related to
(deep) machine learning and big data analytics, as well as with
members of the Institute of Astrophysics
(IA-FORTH) for astrophysics-related tasks. The post-doctoral
researcher will also have the opportunity
to travel to meetings with the other ARGOS-CDS nodes in France and
Germany and will be strongly
encouraged to attend international conferences to present results.
ICS-FORTH and IA-FORTH:
The Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) is the
largest and most prestigious research
center in Greece with modern facilities and highly qualified
personnel.
It comprises ten research institutes located throughout Greece.
The Institute of Computer Science (ICS-FORTH) and the Institute of
Astrophysics (IA-FORTH)
are located in the main campus, around 5km south of Heraklion on the
island of Crete, Greece.
Members from both IA-FORTH and ICS-FORTH are involved in the
ARGOS-CDS project.
The group is committed to diversity and equality, encourages
applications from women and underrepresented minorities,
and supports a flexible and family-friendly work environment.
Benefits for this position include retirement, health care, and
parental leave.
Required qualifications
• Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Astrophysics,
or related field
• At least 2 years demonstrated experience with the development of
big data analytics platforms; this includes experience with highly
parallelizable sparse solvers (e.g. sparse/low-rank multivariate
signal decompositions) and distributed processing platforms (e.g.
GraphLab, Mahout and MLI)
• Publications in related fields
• Working experience in relevant European and/or National R&D
projects
• Willingness and ability to work cooperatively within a team, to
learn, and to adapt to the projects
• Excellent organization and time management skills
• Good knowledge of English
• Physical presence at FORTH, Heraklion, Crete for the duration of
the position
• Completed military services (for Greek male citizens; if
applicable)
Desired Qualifications
• Experience in embedding algorithms/software in high-performance
computing platforms (e.g. GPUs, FPGAs)
• Experience with SKA-model observations is a plus but not a
prerequisite
• Decision-making and representation of the
team/laboratory/institute at both national and international levels
